Lifesteps History

Lifesteps is proud and humbled to announce our 100th Anniversary and invites you to celebrate this important milestone with us. The organization has served hundreds of thousands of individuals and families of all ages and abilities with life’s changing needs for over a century. Lifesteps is honoring its history while focusing on the future.

Our Beginnings…
In 1923, Butler Rotarians formed a Crippled Children’s Committee offering “Service Above Self” by helping local children afflicted with polio. The services were supported by Rotary members, but then eventually formally organized as the Butler County Society for Crippled Children.

By 1954, the Agency was offering eight programs and services. In 1980, the Agency became an affiliate of the National Easter Seal Society. The name was changed to Lifesteps in 1994; becoming an independent organization to ensure the Agency’s focus and resources remained at the local community level. The Organization has since continued growing and expanding to offer over forty programs and services throughout western Pennsylvania.

Now in 2023, Lifesteps and its subsidiaries, accessAbilities and All Abilities, serve on average 7,500 individuals with over 800 dedicated and caring staff in 67 locations. Today’s services provide “Generations of Care” for children of every ability, families, students & adults with disabilities, as well as seniors. Lifesteps attributes 100 years of providing quality programs and services to caring, committed, and compassionate staff who provide exceptional support to those we serve.
