The brain of a young child grows incredibly fast. At birth, brain size approximates one quarter of an adult, doubles in the first year, reaches 80% of adult size by age three, and nearly 90% by age five, which means preschool years are prime learning years! Preschoolers learn letters and sounds, counting and sorting, while learning the importance of sharing, taking turns, and following directions. They also learn to identify and express emotions.

Studies show that children who attend preschool programs do better in language, math, and problem-solving skills than those who don’t. One landmark study, Perry Preschool Project, followed children for over 60 years and found that those who went to preschool were more likely to graduate high school, secure employment, and stay out of trouble.
So, what better birthday gift can you give to a child turning three than enrolling them in Lifesteps Preschool (scholarships available) or Pre-K Counts, a free preschool program for qualifying families? Lifesteps offers Preschool at six locations: three in Butler County, two in Beaver County, and one in Armstrong County.
Lifesteps certified teachers are highly trained to work with children of all abilities, and there’s at least one staff member for every 10 enrolled children. Each Lifesteps classroom offers a safe and nurturing environment, including child-sized furniture and easy access to learning materials to encourage independence and exploration. Lifesteps classrooms are divided into distinct learning areas that support a balance of structured activities and child-led play.

Preschool isn’t just about snacks, naps, and storytime; it’s one of the most valuable gifts to help kids grow up smart, confident, and ready for life.
