Behavioral Support Services

Lifesteps' Behavioral Support Services provide specialized training for both families and professionals who care for children and adults with challenging behaviors. Lifesteps’ professionals work with an individual’s care team to implement person-centered strategies that will help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities achieve their fullest potential. The Behavioral Support team includes Board Certified Behavior Analysts.

Any individual with an intellectual/developmental disability who is over 3 years of age may be eligible for Behavioral Support Services. When an individual is referred to Behavioral Support Services, a Lifesteps’ team member will contact the family and/or the Supports Coordinator to determine service eligibility. Through a functional behavior assessment, a Lifesteps’ team member will develop a behavior support plan and work with the individual, family and care team to ensure effective implementation. Services can be provided within any environment such as a home, child care, preschool, school, church, day program or residential living arrangement.

The goal of Behavioral Support Services is to help develop family and care team independence through a fading service approach.

The Speech and Language Connection

Communication deficits often underlie challenging behaviors. Lifesteps Behavioral Services and Speech Services teams work together to optimize therapy.

Lifesteps Speech Services team, comprised of Certified and Licensed Speech–Language Pathologists, specializes in verbal and nonverbal communication strategies, including use of Augmentative Communication Systems. The team works directly with the individual, family and service providers to assess an individual’s communication skills and develop instructional strategies for improving their communication.

Creating Positive Possibilities...

Behavior Support Plan strategies work to help the individual improve in 4 areas:
• Communication skills
